In the United States, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) allows anyone to request public records from government agencies — including immigration records that may directly affect your case.
En Estados Unidos, la Ley de Libertad de Información (FOIA) permite solicitar registros públicos a agencias de gobierno — incluyendo expedientes migratorios que pueden afectar directamente su caso.
Immigrants leave a record with the government every time they have contact with a government authority. For example: if you tried to cross the border undocumented, you have a record with CBP. If you applied for asylum or any benefit that was denied, there is a record with USCIS. If you were removed from the United States, there is a record with ICE. Knowing your record before starting any immigration process is essential.
Los inmigrantes dejan registro con el gobierno cada vez que tienen contacto con una autoridad. Por ejemplo: si intentó cruzar la frontera sin documentos, tiene un registro con CBP. Si solicitó asilo o algún beneficio y fue denegado, hay un registro con USCIS. Si fue deportado, hay un registro con ICE. Conocer su expediente antes de iniciar cualquier trámite es fundamental.
